Faves in Five

Remember when Whitney and I did A Girls Guide to Greenville? Check out my post here. In that post, I discussed an idea I had for a Strikes of Luck series entitled "Faves in Five." It would be a recap of my current favorites in five words in order to share some fun behind-the-scenes peeks into my life behind the blog.

So here we go with my "Faves in Five," Thursday, July 20, 2017 edition:

Striving for Serendipity

The classic start to a blog post like this:

Serendipity (noun): the faculty or phenomenon of finding valuable or agreeable things not sought for.

The most important part of this definition: "not sought for." Expecting the unexpected. Letting life lead. Embracing spontaneity. What could be more fun than that?

I used to be an obsessive planner. I suppose, to some degree, I still am. I'm addicted to my Passion Planner, I love to write things down, and I like to have a general idea of the day's events.  This is where you ask the ever-obvious question: how do I strive for serendipity?

  • Strikes of Luck

Obviously my biggest motivator for serendipity is Strikes of Luck. This online space where I live and love local and share and support others. I couldn't have imagined what kinds of opportunities would come my way when I built this blog on Squarespace a little over a year and a half ago. From the States to Scotland back to the States, I've created an intentional online hub for my adventures.

  • Planning in Presence

Presence is the act of existing, right now, in the moment, wherever you are. The planning part might be a bit counterintuitive. To me, it means that if I know I'm going to a specific coffee shop to work for the afternoon, I'll be open to the people and ideas surrounding me. Even if I don't know where I'm going for the afternoon, I'll still walk into the situation with an open mind and an open heart. This is how I plan to be present.

  •  Expect to Unexpect

As the definition states, serendipity is the "not sought for."  How can you expect the unexpected, the not sought for, the glorious discovery? The realization that serendipity is out of my control is simultaneously freeing and terrifying. Why would I want to live my life without some sort of expectations? Don't abandon your plans, your curiosities, your goals. That's the way that you find the best kind of serendipity.

So here are Sarah's three tips to strive for serendipity:

  1. Find your lucky strike of the day, every day.
  2. Plan to be present and aware of your space.
  3. Expect and embrace that the unexpected will happen.

I can't wait to hear your stories of serendipity. Fill out my Google form, leave a comment below or on my Instagram to share yours!

Lucky Strike of the Day: I finally tried the frosé at Happy + Hale! Worth the wait, especially when paired with the banana toast. Thanks to Katie for her genuine conversation.

Together in Tandem

If you follow me on Instagram, even if you've only followed me for a little while, you KNOW that my favorite place in the entire world is Tandem. Tandem Crêperie and Coffeehouse, to be exact. #togetherisbest

Our favorite flat lay.

Our favorite flat lay.

Of course, when I saw that Tandem had Fourth of July crêpes, I couldn't resist. Here's the story of another adventure with Natalie, photography, and food:

We (Natalie + Jacob + Sarah) met at 11:30 am on Monday, July 3rd. Yes, I know that it wasn't on July 4th, but the spirit was still there. Decked out in our red, white, and blue attire with a little added flair, we ate these three crêpes (link to the menu is here):

Natalie, crêpe on top: Fiesta- Shredded chicken, black beans, and cheese, topped with fresh salsa and sour cream

Sarah, crêpe on bottom left: Red, White, and Blueberries- Blueberry cream (originally key lime, but I substituted blueberry), blueberries, raspberry drizzle, and whipped cream

Jacob, crêpe on bottom right: Lumberjack- Ham, bacon, eggs, and cheese, topped with maple syrup and béchamel

A closer look. All photos for the rest of the post, including this one, were edited by Natalie.

In addition to celebrating crêpes, my favorite kind of celebration, we also dressed for the occasion and did a mini photo shoot. Many thanks to Jacob for his great photography skills.

A classic candid.

Natalie and I love to laugh. So much so that we take photos like the one above. I loved reconnecting with her, hearing about her trip to Spain with Jacob, and reveling in our appreciation for good food and good photos.

Fun fact: all sides of Tandem (inside, outside, and all around) are photogenic.

One of my favorite parts of spring and summer are the blooming flowers everywhere. These caught my eye outside of Tandem because they celebrate a great season.

Natalie and I had to recreate the photo above because we took a similar photo at Taylors Mill when we first met and adventured. These Instagram friendships are real and great and beneficial. I love Instagram because I have the opportunity to connect with so many lovely people from different definitions. When we meet, it's the definition of #togetherisbest.

As always, thanks to Tandem for the wonderful food, people, and memories.

Lucky Strike of the Day: There were so many today! Follow along on my story to see Swamp Rabbit Cafe, King of Pops GreenvilleDue South Coffee (special appearance by Miss Ellie Goldendoodle), Methodical Coffee, and Target. Thanks, Greenville, for a great Fourth of July home.
